•My late wife Rosemarie passed away in 1991 from a diagnosis of carcinoma cancer (stomach cancer). Age 29
•16 years later, Aug.2007 my daughter Erin passed away from a diagnosis of Hereditary Diffuse Gastric (HDGC) Cancer. Age 20
•A genetic killer has been found in our family’s ancestry.
•Genetic testing on Rosemarie’s family has found 4 individuals to carry the CDH-1 mutation.
My daughter has left her family and relatives a gift; an opportunity for genetic testing to determine if they have inherited a mutation. Our ancestry has determined that the Sutherland Family Tree (Saskatchewan) carries the CDH-1 mutation.

DONALD SUTHERLAND – born in 1863 Caithness Scotland immigrated to Whitby Ontario, Canada in 1883.
GORDON SUTHERLAND – born 1897; 1st marriage to Elizabeth Brown; 2nd marriage to Francis Coghill in 1935 had 4 children.
Henry Sutherland (Born 1936); MARGARET SUTHERLAND (born 1939); Earl Sutherland (born 1942); LINDA SUTHERLAND (born 1947)

HEREDITARY DIFFUSE GASTRIC CANCER

Hereditary Diffused Gastric Cancer or HDGC is believed to been around since the time of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The CDH1 gene was first found to be a hereditary risk factor for gastric cancer in 1998.

“The average age for someone with HDGC to be diagnosed with gastric cancer is 38; Women with HDGC also have an increased risk of lobular breast cancer.” – cancer.net

“HDGC is a genetic condition.This means that the cancer risk and other features of HDGC can be passed from generation to generation in a family.”

The gene associated with HDGC is CDH1. A mutation alternation; HDGC is becoming more common in younger patients.

E-cadherin protein (CDH-1) gene the risk of developing gastric cancer in a patient with CDH-1 gene is estimated at 67% for men and 83% for women before the age of 80.

“1-3% of all gastric cancers are of CDH-1 mutation
